Nova Scotia Health
AOS will lead the program redesign and optimization of care delivery operations to help drive technology adoption and the digital transformation initiative at Nova Scotia Health.
The Challenge
Before the Oncology Transformation Project (OTP), Nova Scotia Health's cancer care system was burdened with disjointed interactions and manual processes, which affected patient care. The healthcare delivery system was fragmented, making it difficult for care providers to offer the right care, at the right time, in the right place, and by the right provider.
Additionally, the manual processes led to delays in medical oncology prescribing, pharmacy dispensing, infusion operations, and drug administration. As a result, patients struggled to access advanced cancer care.
“Varian is helping us transform cancer care and patient outcomes,” said Dr. Helmut Hollenhorst, Senior Medical Director of Nova Scotia Health’s Cancer Care Program. “With a unified system connecting centers across the province, patients can access the right care, at the right time, in the right place, by the right provider.”

The Solution
To address these challenges, Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, and Nova Scotia Health collaborated to lead the digital transformation of the health system's comprehensive oncology service line through the Oncology Transformation Project. The five-year project expanded upon and integrated Nova Scotia Health's existing Varian software capabilities to establish a unified, connected network of multi-disciplinary oncology software and services supporting patient care across eight centers, including regional centers located throughout the province.
Transformation, implementation, deployment, and modernization of their entire clinical oncology program.
